Is there a right or wrong way to behave in a casino? Indeed, there is! In fact, from the moment you walk through those doors your casino etiquette is rather important. You probably shouldn’t expect to find a pre-defined list of the do’s and don’ts when you enter the casino, but we can help you out with those.
Now, you’ll probably find your first visit to a brick and mortar casino quite daunting, feeling like the only newbie there. But remember, you’re probably not and if you know these unwritten rules you’ll be like a pro in no time.
The Do’s
Walking into the casino that very first time we admit might be a bit ‘scary’ shall we say but it need not be. You’ll probably see cameras scattered around the place closely watching everyone’s movements and the presence of security guards, pit bosses and casino dealers. The good news is all this is pretty standard for any casino you walk into and it’ll be something you quickly get used to.
But before you consider a casino you need to get an appropriate outfit first. Turning up in joggers or ripped jeans won’t be the answer. So, plan your outfit. Go formal or semi-formal. Attire guides include black tie, white tie and for women a cocktail dress or full-length evening gown. Dress for the occasion and you’ll fit right in.
One of the most important things to remember is you are there to have some fun (and to hopefully win some money too). Winning doesn’t come part and parcel with a casino, it’s all down to luck so the biggest ‘do’ for you to remember is to be polite, regardless of whether you are winning or losing. And, as in physical casinos, this is very applicable in the world of online casinos as well.
Your behaviour towards other people at the casino is important. It’s also easy to get carried away if you’re winning but try and stay calm and composed.
As you’re making your way around the casino you’ll probably be deciding which games you’d like to play. Once you decide on a table you’d like to play, ask if you can join. It’s common courtesy for the other members already playing. You should probably do some research when it comes to hand gestures too. Wrong signals to a dealer could end up costly and only touch your cards when it’s appropriate to do so.
Which brings us nicely on to tipping, another important factor of casino etiquette. It’s important to know that tipping is not mandatory but appreciated by the dealers nonetheless. Take note of what other members do and use this to help you.
The Don’ts
Being yourself and having fun with your hard-earned cash is what’s it’s all about but casino etiquette does come with some important ‘don’ts’ as well.
Nowadays you’re usually allowed to take your mobile into the casino but a big don’t to remember is not to use this at a table. If you’re sat at a table and need to text or talk just step away to use it, you don’t want to be accused of wrong-doing! And, while you’re at the table try to make prompt decisions and don’t take too much time out of respect for the other players and the dealer.
Moving on to your money and chips. You don’t need to hand the dealer any money! Just place it on the table and the dealer will change it for the right number of chips for you. You also can’t change your mind about the chips. Once you place a bet, it’s placed. You could be accused of cheating if you try to change your bet and that really is the last thing you want to happen. Make your decision. Stick with it. One more thing, if you’re only intending on watching don’t sit at the table, you can just stand and watch.
Need a drink? There’ll be plenty available for you to enjoy the experience with, some may even be free, but you don’t need to worry about going to the bar for this. The joys of a brick and mortar casino is you’ll have hosts and hostesses on tap, just signal one and save yourself a trip to the bar. You can also remember to tip them. After you’ve enjoyed a few drinks remember to keep being polite and don’t be rude.
Just Have Fun!
Conducting yourself according to the environment is important and if you’re new to the casino you’ll soon pick up the gist of it. How others behave at the casino will help you behave the right way too so take note of your surroundings and we’re sure you’ll be absolutely fine.
